Chapter 15

Jimmy gasped as he opened his eyes, jolted awake as if he’d been shaken.

He was on his back, arms by his sides, bedcovers pulled up under his chin. Unable to breathe. Unable to see anything in the darkness—not even the glowing red numerals on the bedside table.

Creases formed along his forehead as he grimaced from the discomfort of what felt like a knee pressing against his sternum. He shouldn’t be on his back. He was a side sleeper. Had been ever since one terrifying morning before his mother died.

He needed to roll over. He pressed down with his right shoulder and left foot, but the pressure on his breastbone intensified, pushing him deeper into the mattress. With each shallow breath, pain radiated through his chest. He tried raising his left leg to get more leverage, but his leg wouldn’t obey. Then he felt the gentle tension of the bedcovers pulling taut across his skin. He told his arms to fight back but they were pinned—yes, pinned—and unable to move.

Paralyzed.

It was amazing what fear can do, imprinting in your brain like a tattoo. A particular sound, smell, or circumstance can awaken that fear and transport you to an exact moment in time …
